Secretary General, Belgrade Rotaract Global Model UN 2015
On behalf of the entire Secretariat, it is my true honor and pleasure to introduce you to the 2015 Session of Rotaract Global Model United Nations.
My name is Danai Beka and I am 24 years old. I finished my Law studies at the Democritus University of Thrace and earned my master’s degree at the International Hellenic University (LLM in Transnational and European Commercial Law & Alternative Dispute Resolution). I have been a Rotaractor for many years and I have attended numerous Model United Nations Conferences around the world since high school, both as chair and as delegate. My experience in both areas is broad and I do not use the term “exceptional” lightly, but I can assure you all that Rotaract Global MUN is an opportunity that you do not want to miss. Consisted of people passionate for the mission of the aforementioned institutions and dedicated to promote intercultural exchange and dialogue, this is a conference with ideals based on what Robert F. Kennedy said: “There are those who look at the way things are, and ask why? I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?”.
This particular conference will be unique in many ways. It is the third initiative after two incredibly successful and truly international conferences in the Romanian city of Baia Mare and in London Westminster. It is designed to inspire and educate all participants as well as provide an insight into the close link between Rotary and the United Nations. (It is worth mentioning that Rotary’s relationship with the United Nations dates back to 1945 and that Rotary currently holds the highest consultative status possible with the United Nations as a non-governmental organization). Most importantly, this conference is special for one reason: your voices will be heard and your resolutions will reach the desks of the United Nations. This year, as it happened with the previous Rotaract Global MUNs, a Rapporteur’s Office will convey the results of the conference directly to UN officials.
Throughout my time as Secretary General of this conference, I look forward to bringing an even higher profile to the deep compatibility of objectives and values between Rotaract and the United Nations. As a keen believer in diplomacy, I deeply understand the need for the existence of a platform such as the United Nations to resolve issues in a peaceful and consensus manner. I have also experienced Rotary’s principle to nurture leaders by focusing thought upon matters in which members are in agreement, rather than upon matters in which they are in disagreement. Both organizations share inspirational commitment to promote better relations between all people worldwide and give emphasis on the leadership of young people.
Therefore, whether you are an experienced delegate or a new MUNer, I sincerely trust that we can give you something this year that no other conference has ever offered. We are waiting for you to arrive in Serbia’s historic capital city and to be astonished by its beauty and friendliness of its people. Prepare to become diplomats and debate critical issues that concern the international community. Prepare to forget who you are as individuals and learn your nation’s history and policy better than your own names. Prepare to meet people from every side of the world and share your culture and beliefs with them. Prepare to get addicted to the MUN fever and the ideals that Rotary and Rotaract represent. Most importantly, prepare your voices to reach the actual United Nations. Can you handle it? With great power, comes great responsibility.
I am very much looking forward to welcoming you to the 2015 Session of Rotaract Global Model United Nations and see once again the innovative solutions of young people around the world meet the challenges that the international community faces.
